AUSTIN, Tex. – You might as well hand the Big 12 conference trophy over to the Kansas Jayhawks.
We’ve reached the halfway point of the conference season, but the Jayhawks just might be too far in front for anyone to catch them. Marcus Morris scored 18 points to lead No. 1 KU to an 80-68 victory at No. 14 Texas Monday night.
KU improved to 23-1 overall, 9-0 in the Big 12. Texas fell to 19-5 overall, 5-4 in the conference. Texas shot just 37 percent. The Longhorns have lost five of their last seven games after being the No. 1 team in the country a month ago.
KU scored 27 points off 17 turnovers and out-rebounded Texas 45-34. The Longhorns led 14-11, but the Jayhawks went on a 22-0 run in the first half to take control of the game. Texas didn’t score for more than 11 minutes and missed 12 straight shots. KU led 34-24 at halftime.
Kansas may have won big, but one hot topic continues to be whether the Jayhawks are truly the No. 1 team in the country. They looked impressive against Texas but the Longhorns are struggling.
ESPN basketball analyst, Bob Knight, said during the KU-Texas game that he believes Syracuse is the best team in the country when it plays its best. Jack Harry has also indicated that KU should not be ranked No. 1.
