KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The news isn't good for Mike Aviles. The Royals shortstop is out for the entire season.

Aviles will undergo reconstructive surgery on his right elbow next Wednesday. Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles will perform the Tommy John surgery.

Last year's Royals Player of the Year has been on the disabled list since May 23. The recovery period is expected to be nine-to-12 months. He should be back by next April.

Aviles played in 36 games this season and batted just .183 with one home run and eight RBIs.

Willie Bloomquist, Tony Pena Jr. and Luis Hernandez will share time at shortstop for the Royals.
