Sox Hold Off Royals

Last Update: 7/02/2009 10:42 pm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Royals got a good pitching performance from Bruce Chen on Thursday.

The White Sox got a better pitching performance from Mark Buehrle. He only allowed six hits and one run as Chicago beat Kansas City 4-1.

Buehrle had a four-hit shutout heading in to the ninth inning. He eventually gave way to Bobby Jenks, who closed out the game by getting the final two outs. The White Sox have now won six straight.

Buehrle outdueled Chen, who actually pitched pretty well. The left-hander served up a solo home run to Jayson Nix in the fourth inning. The White Sox did not threaten again until adding a run in the seventh inning. They posted runs in the eighth and ninth as well. Chen allowed two runs on five hits over six innings.

The Royals offense finally scored in the ninth inning. It was an embarrassing performance, particularly on the base paths. In the first inning, Willie Bloomquist was doubled off first base after Billy Butler flied out to center field. The next inning Mark Teahen did the exact same thing. He was picked off first base after Miguel Olivo flied out to right.
